Under the Sea Murals: An Ocean View That Never Leaves Your Wall
Living on the Space Coast, the ocean is never far — but most of our walls face the inside of the house. An under the sea mural brings the reef, the turtles, and the clear turquoise water home, and it works in far more rooms than you might expect: nurseries, kids' rooms, bathrooms, and even a surprising number of living spaces. It is also one of the most requested themes Larisa paints, and one of the most fun to design.
Why underwater scenes work in so many rooms
There is a reason aquariums calm people down. Water rendered in blues and greens reads as depth and quiet, which is why an under the sea mural works in a nursery where you want restful energy just as well as in a kids' room where you want imagination.
Because the scene has a built-in direction of light — sunbeams falling from the surface — it fills a wall the way a window does. A room with one underwater wall feels like it has an extra view.
And unlike a busy pattern, an ocean scene scales. The same theme can be a single turtle on a small powder-room wall or a full reef stretching across a bedroom.
Reef, turtles, rays, and other scenes that work
Some of the under the sea scenes that come up again and again in Brevard homes:
- Sea turtles gliding over sandy bottom — the classic for nurseries and kids' rooms, and a real local connection since turtles nest on our beaches.
- A coral reef with small schools of fish, which gives a wall more color variety than any other underwater theme.
- Gentle waves seen from below, with light rays cutting through the water — calm enough for a bathroom, dramatic enough for a feature wall.
- Manatees in the seagrass, for a scene that feels distinctly Florida rather than generic ocean.
- A single large animal — a whale, a manta ray — on a tall wall, where one subject makes the strongest statement.
How an underwater palette is built
Water is never just blue. Near the surface it is turquoise and aqua; deeper down it shifts to teal, then indigo. A good underwater mural layers those tones so the wall reads as depth, and the light beams and highlights are placed last so the water looks like it is actually moving.
The palette also gets tuned to the room. A north-facing bedroom with soft light can take richer, deeper blues; a bright bathroom already flooded with daylight usually wants lighter aquas so the mural does not compete with the window.
This is exactly the kind of decision that gets made during the design conversation — the same reef idea can lean bright and playful for a child or muted and moody for an adult space, and seeing colors against your actual wall is part of the free estimate.
Bathrooms, nurseries, and other small-water spaces
Bathrooms are one of the most popular rooms for an ocean mural, and for good reason: the theme is natural, the walls are small, and even a modest scene makes a powder room memorable. Walls that get steam are prepped and painted accordingly, and the design is kept simple enough that it reads at a glance.
In nurseries, under the sea scenes are usually kept soft — sandy tones, a few turtles, gentle light — so the room stays restful for sleep and can grow with the child. The turtle theme in particular has staying power: it works for a baby, a toddler, and a ten-year-old without needing a repaint.
Laundry rooms, hall nooks, and the wall behind a soaking tub are other spots where a small underwater scene does outsized work.
