What Paint Is Used for Murals? A Guide for Florida Walls

It is one of the most-asked questions about a mural and one of the least useful, because there is no single paint that makes a mural. The answer depends on whether the wall is inside or out, what it is made of, and how the room is used — and in Florida, the paint you choose matters even more than the brand.
The honest answer: it depends on the wall
A powder room, a storefront, and a stucco wall facing the Atlantic have almost nothing in common except that all three can be painted beautifully. The right materials for one would fail on another, which is why any artist who gives you one brand name for every job is answering a question they have not really looked at.
What you can say with confidence is that a mural is a system, not a can of paint: a properly prepared surface, a sound base coat, paints suited to the room, and the drawing itself. The painting gets the credit, but the other three decide whether it still looks good in five years.
The base coat is not the mural
Almost every mural problem people blame on paint is actually a base problem. Drywall that was patched but not primed absorbs color unevenly. A glossy wall that was never scuffed gives the paint nothing to hold. A stain that was covered with ordinary paint bleeds back through in a year.
A good base is a primed, sound, uniform surface in a neutral color. It is also the part a client rarely sees and should ask about anyway, because it is the difference between a mural that keeps its color and one that goes patchy where the wall drank more paint.
What muralists typically paint with
Most interior muralists work with acrylic-based paints, and the reason is unglamorous: acrylic dries fast, cleans up with water, stays flexible as the wall moves with heat, and does not yellow the way oil does in a room that never gets sun.
Inside that choice there are usually two products on the palette at once. Artist acrylics in tubes carry the detail work, because they hold pigment and blend predictably. Quality wall paint in larger quantities covers the broad areas, and a muralist will often tint and mix both together so a large field and a small leaf match perfectly.
Exterior work leans on products made for weather — coatings built to flex with stucco and block UV, often with mildew-resistant additives. Some artists add aerosols for soft gradients, and a few still use mineral or silicate paints on masonry for their durability. What is worth knowing is that none of these are interchangeable, and the choice should be made for your surface, not out of habit.
Why Florida is harder on a mural than most places
Sun is the biggest threat to a mural's color, and a Space Coast summer is not a mild one. Ultraviolet light breaks pigment down at the surface, so the same wall that looks vivid in June can be visibly softer two autumns later. Exterior-grade paints and well-mixed palettes hold up best, and a wall that takes direct afternoon sun will always age faster than one in shade — worth knowing before you choose the wall.
Humidity is the second threat. A bathroom, a laundry room, or any north-facing wall in a coastal house stays damp enough that mildew can colonize a painted surface. In those rooms the paint should be a wipeable one made for damp spaces, and the mural should be planned around the shower line and the sink splash rather than painted and then discovered.
Salt air adds a third layer near the beach. On an exterior wall it settles into the paint film and holds moisture against it, which is why outdoor murals here need paint that breathes, and why a wall a few blocks inland can quietly outlast one right on the water.
One more practical point for households: a hand-painted mural can be dusted and gently wiped, but how hard you can wipe depends on the sheen of the paint. A flatter sheen hides small imperfections on a busy wall; a slight sheen cleans more easily in a home with children. Neither is the right answer for everybody.
What to ask your artist about paint
You do not need to sound like a paint chemist. These five questions will tell you whether the person in front of your wall is thinking about the next ten years:
- What will you use on this specific surface, and why that product here?
- Will the wall be repaired and primed before the design starts?
- What paint will you use here, and does it suit this room — a wet bathroom, a sunny wall, an exterior?
- Can I wipe the mural clean, and how soon after painting is it safe to?
- If it gets scuffed, can you match it later, and what will that cost?
What is not worth worrying about
The brand on the can. Two competent muralists using different products can produce equally long-lasting walls, and a mediocre job with expensive paint is still a mediocre job. Prep, a sound base, and paint matched to the room are what hold up.
Larisa will tell you exactly what she plans to use on your wall and why, once she has seen it — the surface, the light, and how the room is used decide the materials, and every commission is quoted on those specifics. Call (718) 844-7191 or text a photo of your wall to (718) 844-7191 to start.
